The History

The Asian Journal of Social Policy was set up in 2005 by Prof. Christian Aspalter, in the attempt
to support the publication of Social Policy articles in the Asian region, specifically topics on Asia
and articles written by Asian scholars. Two thirds of the world's population is living in Asia, which
unfortunately also have to deal with a lion's share of the world's social problems. Social Policy
and Social Development studies on Asia, or comparative studies including Asia, hence form the
key body of articles being published in the Asian Journal of Social Policy.

Ever since the first publication of the Asian Journal of Social Policy, the Journal has received
widespread support from different regions of Asia, and in the process of acquiring submissions
a great number of scholars from different regions of the Asian continent from Middle East to
South Asia, from Southeast Asia to Northeast Asia, have been inspired and motivated to contribute
to this new venue in journal publications in Asia. Today, the Journal is supported by the
Asian Association for Social Welfare, which was set up in 2006 by leading social welfare
academics and pioneers from around Asia.

The Context

The Editors of the Asian Journal of Social Policy are keenly aware that this daunting task of
developing this new academic journal is nothing short than a pioneering enterprise. Social Policy
always has been a science guided, developed and inspired for the most part by Europe, where
in recent years the study of Social Policy has experienced a great deal of boost in Southern and
Eastern European countries, where new social policy associations and networks have been formed.
In Asia, it is high time to develop the academic discipline of Social Policy. This is the main aim
and key goal for developing and fostering this new Journal, as indicated accurately by the name
of the Journal.

Nature and Aims of the Journal

Asian Journal of Social Policy
is a refereed academic journal, that has set itself highest standards
for the development of theory building, descriptive and normative articles in social policy related
subjects and areas of study. The Journal aims at acquisitioning works by long-established scholars
as well as younger scholars, both of which are sought to contribute cutting-edge theoretical and
empirical studies, such as historical and international comparative case study analysis. Authors
are encouraged to submit articles that intertwine theory with practice while paying particular
attention to the Asian Social Policy context ¨C i.e. Asian politics, culture, and society. The Journal
also supports new critical, constructive theoretical thinking and theory building, as it supports
a competitive academic spirit that is essential for the good of any theory, stream of thinking,
or school of thought, while also emphasizing the importance of empirical testing.
